This was not a planned trip but I could say it was much perfect and full of fun. I heard about the Kanneliya years back but didn’t get any chance through last years to visit. So as I was in
Hikkaduwa last week suddenly I decided to visit Kanneliya on saturday morning and we choose public transport to reach there. It’ not a hard road trip but takes much time than a private
vehicle. If you are a nature lover traveling to Kanneliya would be a great memory for you and want to say that this amazing Kanneliya reserve forest of Sri Lanka took me back to nature.
Once you enter to this lovely rain forest your ears will be full with water streaming and birds and various kind of animals sound.
We prepared our meal from home as there are no place to buy food as it is a very rural village there are only few shops but couldn’t ensure that you could find perfect meal. So buy your food and beverages from the Galle city. THere is a small canteen inside but it only has tea with jaggery and some sri lankan food like Helapa, peni walalu. Before leave taste them according to my experience they were rich in taste.

Why Kanneliya so special and does tourist attraction there?

Kanneliya is a one of UNESCO biosphere reserve. Though it is full of fun and entertainment very few heard and know about this lovely Kanneliya rain forest. It is not much bigger and rich like
sinharaja but it’s worth to visit especially if you are having a one day spare time around Galle.Kanneliya rain forest is situated 35 km northwest of city of Galle.

Travel Kanneliya by public transport

So if you are looking for cheap travelling i suggest you to select public transport bus. First you need to go to the Gale and from there take the “Ududgama” bus. This route it will take 1 and half hour. Then just after getoff from the Udugama bus stand you can get the bus to “Thawalama”.After around 20mins of travelling you could get off from Kaneeliya and from there you have to walk 1.5km to reach the Kanneliya reserve forest. If you are going on a one day trip then you can get 4.30pm bus by the Kanneliya to get back to Galle. The buses are not crowded you could relaxly travel only problem is too slow driving.

What I can do in Kanneeliya ?? Do I need a guide?

Sri Lanka has so many hiking sites the Kanneliya would be one of your favorite if you ever been to there. Within my visit to Kanneliya i had a great hike , visited waterfalls and cave.In Kanneliya they have several kind of tours including nearest waterfall watching, hiking the mountain and 3 waerfalls watching, bird watching etc . You could select one of them based upon the time and preference of yours. If you are getting into Kanneliya rainforest then it is must to hire a guide for you. At the entrance they have established the reservation office and there you could contact instructor they will arrange a guide for you and he will help you throughout the tour. Our guide was Upul and he gave a detailed full guidance including specific birds and flora and fauna. They know each of their whistle and the behaviors. According to him if you are interested in bird watching go there early morning.Based upon the details provided by upul there are private companies over there who arrange camping sites and day tours which are worth including breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner also the bbq parties at a side of the reserve forest which owned by personal companies.

Just like other rainforest you couldn’t see lots of animals but birds, lovely flora and fauna and most lovable waterfalls…but real jungle we loved it.

Kanneliya Anagimala Ella Falls and Bath in Crystal clear Kaneliya oya

Within my trip I was travelling with my little one year old baby and therefore we choose to visit only the nearest waterfall called “Kanneliya Anagimala Ella Falls” which was soo beautiful and scenic.Compared to most of waterfalls this one was much wider. THe water streaming was not too high but we were able to have a good look. There were specific birds , butterflies and for the first time I captures butterflies drinking water.Wow it was an amazing trip.

Here you will find some scenic photographs of Anagimala waterfalls which I have captured through my camera lenses. Hope you will love them. After relaxing some time near the waterfall we were back to the entrance and near to that there is a place for bath in Kanneliya oya. Yes you should bath there because it vanished out tired and we were soo hungry after the bath. THe water is crystal clear and cold. I love it and wanna be there again.

What is the best season to visit Kanneliya ???

Kanneliya is having 3 beautiful waterfalls therefore to see the scenic views of Waterfalls December to february would be great as water streams are rich after the rain. But to watch the full flow water falls best time is May to July but it is also bit dangerous and will be highly leaches available everywhere. If you are planning for a great hiking experience March and April would be best matched and in this period waterfalls also having considerable water stream as I was been there last weekend in month of march. August, September Can be quite dry. Good for hiking but water levels will be low. AS high chance of raining don’t plan for Kanneliya visit on November and December months.

Is it worth visiting Kanneliya rain forest ??

Yes it is you must go there if you are traveling to Southern and having a spare day with in your tour. I was amazed by the experience I got there and that is why am telling sharing my experiences with you to impress you about what you can have there. So if you having anything to know about travelling to Kanneliya drop me a mail. I’ll help you. So come and enjoy this amazing nature Kanneliya forest Sri Lanka.
